Andy's Fish Bar of Church Gresley in Derbyshire are proud to have been voted the best fish and chip shop in the very competitive Seafish competition in the UK Midlands region for the third consecutive year.
The Staff
When asked what it is that has made Andy's so successful in the national Fish & Chip Shop of the year competition owner's George an Toni put it down to two things: the consistent high quality of the fish and chips they serve and a high level of staff training which leads to an exemplary shop and customer service standards that are second to none.
Andy's are very proud of our staff training programme. "We have 12 part time staff many of whom have been with us for several years. Our shop is based on an ethic of a very high level of hygiene and customer service and this can only be maintained by motivated and trained staff. We are proud of the development of the skills of our staff." All members of staff at Andy's have the Health and Hygiene Award and in addition four have passed the Intermediate Health & Safety at work with distinction. Customer service is important in our trade so Andy's made arrangements for six of our staff to study for the NVQ in Customer Relations and all have passed. With three friers holding the Seafish Frying Skills Award you can always be sure that the food will be of the highest standard.
George and Toni are extremely proud that Matthew Holland, who trained in their shop and now manages their new shop in Chesterfield, has reached the final three of the National Fish Friers Federation (NFFF) Young Fish Frier Of the Year competition. With such a comprehensive training and development programme it is not surprising that Andy's has a low turn over of staff, some of which have been with the shop for over nine years.
Local Competition and Product Quality
There are 14 fish and chip shops within a 2 mile radius of Andy's which means that our product must always be of the highest quality. "We take great care in sourcing our ingredients from suppliers who can be relied upon to consistently deliver top quality produce. We are a quality shop and it is a false economy to buy inferior ingredients to save a few pounds".
The fish is grade A fresh fish - Haddock - and frozen at sea Cod from Smales, potatoes are Maris Piper and are locally sourced. The fish is coated in Middletons batter and fried in Frymax. "We use Frymax because its really important that we use the best quality oil available as it effects the taste of every portion of fish and chips we serve." With our focus on quality food, excellent customer service, the highest hygiene standards and staff training Andy's is leading the way for the future of the trade.
